Cibola County (Fence Lake area, west-central NM near Zuni/Mt. Taylor country), ~6,200-8,525 ft: mesas, canyons and large basins below ~7,800 ft, with sandy washes and sagebrush flats grading to juniper ridges, ponderosa pine and Gambel oak higher up.
Elk, mule deer and pronghorn are managed by NMDGF through its limited-entry draw with a license required (elk tags are few and demand is high); black bear is huntable (Unit 12 lies in an NMDGF bear management zone) and cougar is huntable statewide. Consult NMDGF for current dates.
Roughly 39% public land — a mixture of state trust, BLM, Navajo tribal and private; central/NW/SE portions are mostly private with many landlocked state sections, while the southwest is mostly state and BLM.
